Indonesian online radio Ohdio today has opened itself to independent Indonesian bands who wish to have their songs broadcast on its service. In a blog post, the company is calling for bands to submit their songs directly for consideration. While Ohdio already has a deal in place to feature many local artists and bands, the company wishes to feature as many acts as possible and provide the widest range of songs for its listeners.

“We understand that Indonesia has a lot of potential bands and musicians that are untouched by the industry and we feel that Ohdio could be the channel that empower them”, Ohdio CEO Yoga Nandiwardhana told DailySocial.

Ohdio recently underwent a complete overhaul of its service from an on demand music service with custom playlists to an online radio with a curated, mood-based playlists. The difference is that previously individuals can sign up to Ohdio and create their own playlists based on the library of songs that Ohdio has, but now, music fans are not required to sign in and they don’t have to go through the tedious steps of creating their own playlists.

Nandiwardhana declined to provide the details of Ohdio’s listeners and their behaviors but he did say, “we have quite a number of listeners but of course we still want more. What we also want more is for them to come back to Ohdio regularly for their music fix”.

His statement suggests that Ohdio’s service may have attracted quite a lot of new listeners since the reboot but many of them hadn’t return as often as they would like or not return at all. Expanding the range and increasing the size of its music library could be one way for Ohdio to gain and maintain a healthy number of listeners.

Independent bands and artists often have difficulties in getting their songs to hit the airwaves on traditional radios due to the heavy competition from more established acts or acts signed by labels. Radios tend to play songs from acts that are already popular which means new acts, especially independent ones, are squeezed out.

Ohdio’s offer may be a way for both indie acts and Ohdio to expand the number of listeners and fans and get these new acts discovered through Ohdio’s curated playlists.
